John Durain, Us Army (Ret.)

John Durain, 85, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born on June 17, 1929 in Joffre, PA to the late Joseph and Gertrude Gareis Durain.
John retired from the United States Army as a Command Sgt. Major after 23 years of service. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the Carlisle VFW Post #477, the Carlisle American Legion Post #101, the Elks Lodge #578 in Carlisle and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1299. He was an avid golfer, bowler and was a proud supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a dedicated gardener and shared his bumper crop of tomatoes every year with his grateful neighbors.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred "Dolly" Janeshek Durain of Carlisle; a daughter, Dawn C. Durain and partner, (Mary Ellen Balady) of Hopewell, NJ; a son, John J. (and wife Mary Ann) Durain of Carlisle; a step-son, James Janeshek of Burgettstown, PA; two step-grandchildren, Jason Janeshek and Amiee White; and two step-great-grandchildren, Rowan and Rylen White. John was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Kristoff Durain.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the services.
