John A. Morefield, Jr.

John A. Morefield Jr., 78, of Mechanicsburg, PA, Chautauqua, NY, and Scottsdale, AZ died Sunday, November 4, 2012.

He was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 23, 1934. He attended The Mercersburg Academy, class of 1952, and received his B.S. in 1956 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT, John was an outstanding Track and Field Athlete and was the alternate hammer thrower for the United States Olympic Team in 1956.

For 33 years, John served as President of Morefield Communications Inc. in Camp Hill, PA, retiring from active day-to-day work in April, 1999. From 1997 to 2010, John continued as the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Morefield Communications.

Throughout his career, John was a devoted community servant to a variety of Central PA institutions. John was a member of the Board of Directors of The Harrisburg Symphony, United Way of the Capital Region, the Harrisburg Area YMCA, Silver Spring Township Supervisor, the Tressler Lutheran Fund and, most recently, The State Street Academy between 2003-2008. John was both a member and President of the board at the Carlisle Regional Performing Arts Center and the Central PA youth ballet.

John extended his service to his collegiate alma mater, MIT, and Chautauqua Institution, where he spent his summers. At MIT, he was a member of the Corporation (Trustees) for eleven years and President of the Alumni Association for one year. For his service John was awarded the highest award for service, the Bronze Beaver. At Chautauqua he served on the board for the Chautauqua Center for Visual Arts and was active with The Chautauqua Fund.

John was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Camp Hill, PA, and in the winter Pinnacle Peak Presbyterian Church, Scottsdale, AZ. He has been a member of Harrisburg Rotary since 1964. He enjoyed membership at the St. Botolph Club, Boston, MA, the Carlisle Country Club, and, more recently, at the DC Ranch Country Club, Scottsdale, AZ.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Anne Morefield, his children John David Morefield, of Mechanicsburg, PA, Anne Elizabeth Schoepke, of Bolton, MA, James Frederick Morefield of West Chester, PA, and his brother, Frederick Lawrence Morefield of Sleepy Hollow, NY.

A memorial service will be held 11 AM Friday, November 9 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2000 Chestnut Street, Camp Hill. Burial will be held later at Chautauqua Cemetery, Chautauqua, NY.

Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
