Joan D. Smith, 63, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at M.S. Hershey Medical Center.
She was born August 24, 1954 in Bellefonte to the late Oscar and Lois (Shaffer) Dunkle.
Joan was an active member of The Meeting House – Dillsburg. She loved her family, had great faith, and enjoyed the outdoors. Joan completed her master’s degree in education at Shippensburg University. During her career as a 7th grade reading teacher at Yellow Breeches Middle School she instilled her passion for reading into her students.
She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Glenn E. Smith Jr. of Carlisle; one daughter, Leah (husband Matthew) Richwine of Newville; one son, Mark (wife Meggan) Smith of Gettysburg; two grandchildren, Chloe and Caleb Smith both of Gettysburg; and two brothers, Thomas (wife Maria) Dunkle of Lawrenceville, GA and Larry Dunkle of Pittsfield.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at The Meeting House – Dillsburg with Pastor James Yutzy officiating. Burial will be private and will be held at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joan D. Smith Scholarship Fund c/o Members 1st Federal Credit Union.
