Jennie Marie Jones
Nov. 23, 1924 – 2012
Jennie Marie McDermitt Jones, 87, died March 9 in Carlisle, attended by loving family and friends.
Jennie Marie was born in New Oxford, the daughter of the late Hugh and Ozella Carl McDermitt, raised in York Springs and graduated from York Springs High School. She went on to graduate from Thompson College and work at Prudential Insurance in Harrisburg. She later was employed by the U.S. Naval Depot in Mechanicsburg, and in Carlisle, by H&R Block and the former Irwin, Irwin & Irwin (now Irwin & McKnight).
Jennie Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Harold James Jones Jr., and her brothers, Carl and George McDermitt. She is survived by four children, James David Jones (and wife Darla), of Stewartsville, N.J.; Mark Edward Jones (and wife Mary), of Hall, Mt.; Matthew Brian Jones, of Golden, Colo.; and Karen Marie Jones, of Selinsgrove. She will also be forever remembered by her five grandchildrenâ€â€Virginia LaForte, Craig Jones, Christina Jones, Alison Jones and Tyler Jonesâ€â€two great-grandchildren; her caring in-laws; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and loving friends.
Jennie Marie was proud of her Irish heritage and the country upbringing that made her resourceful and resilient. Her flashes of humor caught many by surprise. She enjoyed browsing yard sales, walking in the woods and mountains, feeding the ducks in Letort Park, working on her jigsaw puzzles, and visiting with her children and her family from York Springs. Having traveled the country, from the wild rivers of Montana, to the Colorado Rockies, to the national monuments of Washington, D.C., to the colorful backroads of New England in autumn, she ultimately found contentment watching the irises and lilies grow and the birds feed in her backyard.
The family is grateful to its home caregivers, and to the dedicated staffs of Celtic Health Care Hospice and Thornwald Home for the extraordinary care and companionship they shared with Jennie Marie. Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial March 17 at 2 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle, followed by burial in St. Patrick’s New Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Pine Grove Furnace State Park at PPFF, 105 N.
