James R. “Jim” Carpenter, Sr., age 86 of Newville, PA died on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at his residence with his loving family at his side. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on February 12, 1934 to the late Sellers F. and Mary M. Ellinger Carpenter and was the widower of Helen P. Jones Carpenter who passed on January 19, 2020.
Jim was a life-long farmer in Newville, and he also worked at the Plainfield Service Plaza on the PA Turnpike. Jim was a graduate of Greenwood High School Class of 1950. He was a member of FFA and he was a collector of Oliver Tractors. He was an avid hunter and fishermen. Most of all he enjoyed the time he spent with his loving family. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Angie and Doris who were Jim’s caregivers for their excellent care of their father.
He is survived by his son, James R. Carpenter Jr. (wife Connie) of Carlisle, two daughters, Nancy P. Carpenter, Carlisle and Donna M. Bertolini (husband Douglas), Sahuarita, AZ, three brothers, Barton Carpenter, Carlisle, William Carpenter (wife Mel), Duncannon, Frank Carpenter (wife Bev), Kernersville NC, four grandchildren, Justin and Derrick Carpenter, Mallory and James Bertolini, and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Ellinger.
Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of his family. Burial will be in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions in Jim’s name be made to Wesleyan Church of the Cross, 430 B St., Carlisle, PA 17013.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Rd. Carlisle, PA 17013.
