James Phillips Kane

July 5, 1930 — February 15, 2013

James Phillips Kane, 82, of Carlisle, PA, died unexpectedly on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community. Jim was kind and loving to all people, while selflessly and tenderly cherishing his wife and family.
Born July 5, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, Jim was the eldest of three sons of the late James and Mary Kane. Attending Brooklyn College, Jim met his wife Irene who became his life-long partner in love and family. Jim later graduated from St. John’s University, moved with Irene to Rochester, NY and began to raise a family blessed with ten children. Jim served in the US Navy and later worked as a Comptroller for a large law firm, while also teaching college level Accounting. Later, Jim, Irene and family moved to Malone, NY, where Jim continued to work as a Comptroller, while also caring for his family, supporting his community and enjoying his garden. When they retired, Jim and Irene donated a year together, serving the poor in Worcester, MA. They lastly moved to Carlisle, PA, where they established a new loving home.
As a loving husband, Jim was married to Irene for 61 years. Jim was also a mentor and role-model to his children as baseball coach and Boy Scout leader, while always making birthdays and summer vacations special with cook-outs on the grill. Jim and Irene hosted large gatherings of family, friends, and neighbors at their home, providing generous hospitality to one and all. A lasting legacy of their boundless love was their annual Thanksgiving celebration, which provided a holiday weekend of fun and feast. The Kane Family has celebrated Thanksgiving this way for decades and it continues to this day as a treasured family tradition. As Jim would always say, “It’s great to be here!â€Â
Jim is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Uhlman (and husband, Richard) of Kingwood, TX and Jean Yannello (and husband, Ray) of Poquoson, VA; seven sons, Paul Kane of Victor, NY, Bob Kane (and wife Patty) of Rockville, MD, Matthew Kane (and wife Ann Markes) of Florence, MA, Timothy Kane of Washington, DC, William Kane (and wife Minneh) of Arlington, VA, John Kane (and wife Dawn) of West Monroe, NY, and Tom Kane (and wife Terri) of Malone, NY; 25 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; brother Bill Kane of Fort Lauderdale, FL, sister-in-law Anna Grabarits of New York, NY, and brother-in-law Frank Grabarits of San Diego, CA.
