James F. Miller, Jr. ,90, of Carlisle, PA passed away on September 28, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Florence Smith Miller, who passed away in 2015. Born on January 21, 1933 in Carlisle, PA, he was the son of the late James F. and Orpha McGonigal Miller, Sr.
James was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a medic in the Korean War.
James was a 1951 graduate of Carlisle High School, and earned his bachelor of science degree in education at Shippensburg University. He also earned two master's degrees in counseling and geology from Franklin and Marshall College and Vassar College.
James began his teaching career in Dover, PA where he taught high school science for several years. He then taught 9th grade earth science in Carlisle Area School District for many years until retirement, which corresponded with his keen interest in geology.
James was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Elks Lodge 578, and the American Legion Post 101 all in Carlisle. James also sang in the Carlisle-based barbershop group Carlindian Chorus in the 1970’s. He loved to travel and was also an avid fan of football, European soccer and the Tour de France. He particularly enjoyed the time he spent watching games with his grandson Sam.
James is survived by a daughter Cassie Salomone (husband Frank), of Carlisle; a son, James F. (wife Jamie) Miller, III, of Carlisle; and grandchildren Sophie, Coleman, Sam and Abby. He is also survived by a sister Betty Klair (husband Ron), of Mechanicsburg and was predeceased by a sister, Donna Over Boyd. He also has many nieces and nephews.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Churchtown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James's memory to First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt St., Carlisle, PA 17013 or the Salvation Army International, 20 E. Pomfret St, PO Box 309, Carlisle, PA 17013.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Rd., Carlisle.
