James E. Spangler Sr., 85, of Carlisle, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at UPMC Carlisle.
He was born May 15, 1938, in Carlisle to the late Kenneth W. and Irene M. (Bretz) Spangler.
Jim was a 1957 graduate of Carlisle High School. He honorably served his country in the US Army. Jim was the owner / operator of Cumberland Valley Camping Center for 26 years with his wife. After he retired from the camping center, he was employed as a cashier at both Nells and Giant. Jim was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He was also a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeire 1299 where he was a past president and a member of the Retired Eagles Activity Community. Jim was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed traveling, listening to country music and Elvis Presley. Jim was a fan of all sports, he especially liked watching the New York Yankees, the Dallas Cowboys, and the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball team. Jim loved spending time with his family, he was always happiest when he was with his five grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Betty J. Spangler of Carlisle; one daughter, Tammy A. (husband Steve) Fisher of Carlisle; one son, James E. (wife Misty) Spangler Jr. of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Judy (husband Bill) Crum of York and Joan (husband Denny) Fry of Carlisle; five grandchildren, Hope (husband Sam) Rice, Chase Fisher, Carson Spangler, Kendra Fisher, and Grant Spangler; and many nieces, and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013 with Rev. Randall Zook officiating. Burial will follow at Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jim Kidney Foundation of Central PA 900 S. Arlington Avenue, Suite 134A Harrisburg, PA 17109.
