James A. Boytim, 77, died on Friday, December 12th at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center with his wife of 53 years, Joan Frey Boytim, by his side.
The seventh of eight sons of George and Nellie Boytim, he was born in Tyrone, PA on May 19, 1937. He is predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert, G. William, Paul, Donald and Richard. He is survived by brothers John (Norristown) and Gerald (Carlisle).
A graduate of Tyrone Area High School in 1955, Boytim received both his B.S. and
M.Ed. in Mathematics Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a M.S. Ed. from Temple University, and Ed. D. in Counseling from Indiana University (Bloomington campus). Additional graduate studies were completed at Shippensburg University, Millersville University and Western Michigan University.
Boytim was employed by the Carlisle School District for 21years, where he served as a mathematics teacher, high school counselor, and district counseling psychologist. Following this, he was employed by Dickinson College for 14 years, where he served in the departments of psychology, education and career services. In 1986 he was the recipient of the Ganoe Award for Inspirational Teaching at Dickinson College. He also served as an adjunct professor at Western Maryland College, Shippensburg University, and Wilson College. As a licensed psychologist, he maintained a part-time private practice providing family, marriage and individual counseling services and was a consultant for several small businesses. He also was on the staff of the Family Counseling Clinic at the Methodist Home for Children in Mechanicsburg.
During his professional career, Boytim gave 90 presentations, speeches and workshops at conventions and other professional meetings. Jim was a member of numerous educational, counseling, and psychological organizations, and was especially active as a presenter at Pennsylvania Counseling Association Conferences and American Counseling Association Conventions. He received numerous scholarships, honors and awards including the Nathan C. Schaeffer Memorial Scholarship, Indiana School of Education Award, an Outstanding Counselor in Higher Education Award, an Outstanding Service Award, a Leadership Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Psychological and Counseling Association. He is listed in the 2009 Marquis Who's Who in America.
After retiring from Dickinson College in 1994, Boytim became very involved with volunteer work in the Carlisle Community. He served as a volunteer and later was on the board of Project Share. He previously was on the board of the Bosler Memorial Library. Currently he served on the boards of Child Care Network, Inc., and Carlisle Early Education Center. He was part of the United Way "Success By Six" Leadership Council and the Review Board. He was most passionate about and worked diligently with The Samaritan Fellowship Organization for many years.
Boytim was a fifty year member of the Kiwanis Club, serving on the board numerous times and was president in year 2004. He received the Distinguished Kiwanis Award and was named a George Hixon Fellow at the Pennsylvania District Convention in Philadelphia in 2004.
For over 40 years Jim sang in the Allison Church Choir and after the church unification, he still was actively singing at the present Carlisle United Methodist Church.
Jim was an avid gardener and was a great supporter of his wife's musical endeavors and the accomplishments of her private voice students throughout the last 50 plus years.
A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015 at the Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 South West Street, Carlisle, with Rev. James E. VanZandt officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
