Howard O. "Barney" Bear, 84, of Carlisle, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at Harrisburg Hospital.
Born May 22, 1930 in Carlisle, a son of the late J. Raymond and Elsie Porter Bear.
Mr. Bear was retired, after thirty-four years from the American National Can Company in Lemoyne as a supervisor of the machine shop. He was a member of the New Product Development Task Force at American National Can Company. He was a former North Middleton Township Supervisor for almost eight years and an employee of the North Middleton Park Crew. He was a Boy Scout leader at St. Paul's Lutheran Church for many years, and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a Deacon, Superintendent, and a Youth Leader at the former Community Baptist Church where he was a member.
Mr. Bear was a 1948 graduate of Carlisle High School and served in the U. S. Navy.
Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Vesta Sipe Bear of Carlisle; one son, Donald Bear (wife, Penny) of Emory, TX; one son-in-law, Michael McClintock of Carlisle; two granddaughters, Sonya Stoner (husband, Michael) of Carlisle and Stacy Bounds (husband, Clint) of Mesquite, TX; two grandsons, M. Ryan McClintock (wife, Candice) of Carlisle and Jeffrey Bear (wife, Amanda) of Wylie, TX; five great-granddaughters: Brooke, Sydney and Chloe of Carlisle and Brittany and Lindsey of Wylie, TX; one great-grandson, Michael of Carlisle; two sisters, Ella Nickel of Carlisle, and Helen Witmer of Newville. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah McClintock and seven brothers: Harry, Selden, George, Paul, Bruce, Fred and Lee.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 29, 2014 at Wesleyan Church of the Cross, 430 "B" Street, Carlisle with Rev. Daniel R. Mikesell officiating. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
