Helen S. Bivens, 89, of Carlisle, formerly of Menno Village, Chambersburg, PA died Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community, Carlisle, PA.
Born May 31, 1925 in Clear Spring, MD, she was a daughter of the late Ralph and Anna Margaret Fiery Shinham.
She was a graduate of Clear Spring High School, Clear Spring, MD and attended the University of Maryland. She taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a leader for Brownies, Girl Scouts and 4-H. She was a member of Franklin County Society of Farm Women Group #5, she was a member of the Fulton Chapter #519 Order of Eastern Star, McConnellsburg, PA; American Association of Retired Persons Norland Chapter #3261, a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Dietrich-Brechbill Post #612 St. Thomas, PA; a member Thrivent Franklin/Fulton County Chapter and a volunteer for Menno Haven Retirement Community, Chambersburg, PA. For more than twenty-five years she managed a food program for low income and needy families for Thrivent Chapter for Lutherans in coordination with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Helen has donated her body to Humanity Gifts Registry for anatomical study and research.
Helen was survived by her husband, Merrill Reid Bivens who passed away on January 10, 2015 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center; a daughter Anna Margaret Bivens Scott (and husband, Thomas) of Carlisle; and two granddaughters, Emily Alane Scott Geddes (and husband Robert) of Holmes, PA and their children, Robert, Joshua, and Michael and Janet Lynn Scott Donovan (and husband, Brian) of Swarthmore, PA and their children Claire and Scott.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle, PA. Celebrant will be Chaplain Judy Strayer. Private interment will be in the Union Cemetery, McConnellsburg, PA. There will be a visitation Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
