Harold P. Guy, 88, of Boiling Springs, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011 at home after a long battle with cancer. Born August 5, 1922 and raised in rural Brighton, Iowa, he was the son of the late Daniel A. and Laura E. (Riter) Guy.
Surviving with his loving wife of 66 years, S. Katherine (Otto) Guy, are children Pauline J. Rader of San Antonio, TX, Michael W. Guy of Casper, WY, and Stephen O. Guy of Moscow, ID. Also surviving are grandchildren Mark, Katherine, Nicole, Andrew, Jeremy, Lauren, and Kristin, and great grandchildren John, Sarah, Emma, and Robert, and sisters Doris M. Nordyke of Richland, IA and Dorothy M. Hollingsworth of Packwood, IA. He was preceded in death by daughter Karen K. Wood, and by brothers Donald D. Guy and Kenneth E. Guy.
Harold was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WWII with the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN as an Engineering Technician in the Control Room for the separation of uranium isotopes by the electro-magnetic process. After the War he obtained a degree in Civil Engineering and a Masters degree in Agricultural Engineering from Iowa State University, and then worked with the US Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, for 29 years evaluating the movement of sediment in streams. In this work he lived at Norton, KS, Lincoln, NE, Kensington, MD, Ft. Collins, CO, and Reston, VA. This work also allowed him to prepare many technical writings. He also was involved with ASTM, including several years into retirement, and became chairman of the section for evaluating the amount and movement of sediment in streams.
He was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church, and for many decades was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Soil Conservation Society of America, and Sigma XI (The Scientific Research Society). In retirement at rural Boiling Springs, he and his wife greatly enjoyed much travel with RV’s to visit many friends, relatives, and sights of this great Country, including most of our National Parks. These travels, with other research, also resulted in the preparation of a book published in 2002 on the GUY Family genealogy entitled Descendants of Nicholaus R. and Anna B. Geye.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle with Rev. Jeffrey W. Gibeluis officiating and Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna co-officiating. An internment with memorial services, will be at Sandy Hook Cemetery near Brighton, IA.
