Harold L. North, 86, of Carlisle, died Monday, June 1, 2015 at Carlisle Regional Medical center.
He was born on October 16, 1928 in Burnham, PA to the late James E. and Lavenia McVaugh North and was the widower of Phyllis VanArt North who died in March 2002.
Mr. North was Superintendent of the Carlisle Area School District from 1976 until his retirement in 1985. He came to Carlisle School District in 1957 as Assistant Principal of the senior high school and was elected the first Assistant Superintendent of the school system in 1965. Prior to coming to Carlisle, he began his professional career as a chemistry and physics teacher before becoming a high school counselor in Tyrone, PA. He was a graduate of the Burnham High School, Lock Haven State College and the University of Pittsburgh. Professionally, Mr. North was a member of several local, state and national organizations. He served as President of the All School Study Council sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and past Chairman of the University's School of Education Administrative group for all of its study councils. In 1973, he accompanied a group of educators from the United States to the former Soviet Union to study the educational system of that country. He was past President of the Cumberland County Unit of the American Cancer Society and was a former member of the following organizations; Board of Directors of the Carlisle YMCA, Carlisle Area United Way, Carlisle Chapter of the American Red Cross, United Methodist Home for Children, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, Carlisle Hospital and Health Services, Carlisle Area Health and Wellness Foundation, Cumberland Crossings Retirement Center, Samaritan Fellowship and Maranatha-Carlisle. Following his retirement, Harold volunteered at the Cumberland County Historical Society and at the Butterfly House in Hershey Gardens. He was an active member of the former Allison United Methodist Church.
Harold is survived by three daughters, Victoria (and husband Dr. Robert) Holbrook of Hummelstown, Cynthia (and husband Patrick) Roche of Seaside Park, NJ and Kathleen (and husband P. Jed) Ruegg of Carlisle. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive Harold and Phyllis—Meredith Holbrook Bricker, Saratoga Springs, NY, and great-grandson Joel and great-granddaughter Cecily Bricker, Aaron Holbrook, Hummelstown, Leah Holbrook, Hummelstown, Amelia Roche Lamonde and great-grandsons Sloan and Kellan Lamonde, Clinton, NJ, Timothy Roche, Oakland, CA, Jesse Ruegg, Oakland, CA, Adrienne Ruegg, Taipei, Allison Ruegg McCoy, Carlisle, and Caitlin Ruegg, Carlisle.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Carlisle United Methodist Church, 45 S. West Street, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Mira A. Hewlett officiating. There will be a visitation at the church one hour prior to services. Private interment will be held at Hillside Cemetery, McAllisterville, PA at the convenience of the family.
