Grace B. Gallagher of Carlisle, born to Bessie E. and Harry E. Baer, died Thursday, November 24, 2016. She was the fourth of their six children, all of whom predeceased her. She married James Joseph Gallagher with whom she raised two daughters, Kathryn Gallagher Davison of Washington, DC, and Karen Gallagher Busby (Rudy) of Salisbury, NC.
Professionally, Grace and a friend were proprietors of a specialty children's boutique. At the time of her retirement she was managing the Carlisle office of the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Employment Security. Subsequently Grace obtained a real estate license but quickly redirected her attention elsewhere. Free to pursue her lifelong love of horses, she immediately bonded with her beloved black mare, Tara. Together they learned dressage, winning numerous ribbons in competition. Grace's other lifelong passions were her companion poodles and education. She pursued the latter both locally and through travel. Under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Schiffman she studied American Literature at Dickinson College. As various family members traveled or lived overseas, she visited or accompanied them. Those excursions took her to the Vatican, Italy, France, the Soviet Union, Great Britain and Ireland.
In addition to her two daughters she is survived by four grandchildren, Bret Busby (Sarah) of Salisbury, NC, Bart Busby (Kim) of Atlanta, GA, Brooke McDaniel (Will) of Raleigh, NC, and Bridget Waters (Michael) of Oxford, NC. Her eight great-grandchildren include Emily, Patrick, Kathryn, Grace, Claire, Bridget, Brooke and Benjamin. She is also survived by two special nieces, Julie Beam and Rita Maurice.
