Gerald C. Smith, 83, of Newville died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
Born April 5, 1928, in Ligonier Township, he was the son of the late John G. and Etta Phillippi Smith.
Gerald spent most of his life in the poultry agriculture business and later delivered lunches for the Carlisle School District. He was an active member of the Newville Church of the Brethren and served on the committee for Neighbors in Christ.
Mr. Smith enjoyed spending time in his woodworking shop and loved to garden. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren very much.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Hoffer Smith; two daughters, Cheryl Wilson and her husband John of Conway, Mass., and Patricia George and her husband Dale Jr. of Carlisle; a son, William J. Smith and his wife Judy of Carlisle; a brother, George Smith and his wife Mary Ann of Greensburg; five grandchildren, Phillip George and his wife Sarah of Mechanicsburg, Timothy George of Mt. Holly Springs, David Smith of Enterprise, Ala., Alysia George of Carlisle and Allison Smith of Carlisle; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Smith of Mt. Holly Springs; and a step-great-granddaughter, Tiffany.
He was preceded in death by a son, James G. Smith; a daughter, Susan L. George; and a brother, the Rev. Howard J. Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Newville Church of the Brethren, 16 Carlisle Road, Newville, with the Rev. John Hess officiating. Burial will follow in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens.
There will be a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Monday.
