George Arnold Auman, 90, passed away peacefully, Monday, March 12, 2012, at Thornwald Home surrounded by his loving family.
George was the son of the late Bradford Evans and Nelli (Hemperly) Auman. George was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Dauphin County, grew up in Duncannon and as an adult lived in Carlisle.
George was a graduate of the former Duncannon High School, the Shippensburg State College, and received a master’s degree from Penn State University. He also took post-graduate courses at Temple University. George served in the U.S. Army Signal Core from 1942 to 1946.
George was employed from 1952 until his retirement in 1982 as a teacher, elementary supervisor, and director of several special visual aid programs in South Middleton Township. He was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle, former member of Moose Lodge 761 of Carlisle and the Boiling Springs Lions Club. George was a long-time Phillies fan.
George loved to travel. He and his wife, Jeanne, traveled to all of the United States, except Alaska, mostly in their RV. They also enjoyed camping on the Outer Banks, N.C., and traveled often with Elderhostel. George played keyboard, guitar and harmonica and often went to local nursing homes to share his music. He enjoyed gardening, golfing and fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ruth Carnes, Miriam Gouse and Ona Seitz; and one brother, Bradford E. Auman Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jeanne Swartz Auman and daughters Connie Kuykendall (Garry), and Carol Sprecher (Jack) both of Carlisle. He leaves three grandchildren, Stephanie Stump (Scott) of Perry County, Barbara Dyche (Phillip) and Diane Casner (Eric), all of Carlisle and seven great-grandchildren, Corbin, Brandin and Ethin Dyche, Shelby Shank, Ryan Stump, and Caidin and Peyton Casner.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive, Carlisle with the Rev. Jeffrey W. Gibelius officiating.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
