Frederick A. Umholtz, 91, of Carlisle, died on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at Cumberland Crossing Retirement Community.
He was born March 9, 1929 in Gratz to the late Ralph L. and Neva (Willard) Umholtz.
Fred was a member of The Meeting House, Carlisle (formerly Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church) where he was a greeter and a past board member. He was also a former Presbyterian Deacon and Elder. Fred was a graduate of Mechanicsburg High School and Penn State University in the class of 1954. He graduated with a degree in Forestry, was a member of Tau Phi Delta Social Fraternity, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Xi Sigma Pi Honor Fraternities, and a life member of the Penn State Alumni Association.
Frederick honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany from 1954-1956. Fred was formerly employed as a Forester by Union Camp Paper Corporation, Savannah, GA and later with several forest product firms in New York and Pennsylvania.
He was Past President and Director of Carlisle Lions Club, he received the Chevron Award having served 40 years with the Lions Club, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Fred also formerly served as president in Butler and Bradford Townships, PA, Cortland, NY, and Louisville, GA. Fred was a Golden Member of the Society of American Foresters; a member and Past Director of the New York Forest Owners Assoc., Past Chairman of the New York Tree Farm Committee; and a member of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association. He was a volunteer with the Carlisle Shade Tree Committee and volunteer at Claremont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Fred was interested in family history and was a life member of the Gratz Historical Society as well as a member and board member of the Harris Ferry Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution.
Frederick is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Janet C. (Cray) Umholtz of Carlisle; one son, Gary Forrest Umholtz (partner Linda Zaiss) of California; one daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Umholtz of Wayne; one granddaughter, Emilie Umholtz of California; two grandsons, Nicholas (wife Taylor) Umholtz and Hunter Umholtz both of Colorado; brother-in-law, Richard E. (wife Bonnie) Cray of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Nancy C. Dasher of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his son, Eric Allen Umholtz.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at The Meeting House, 1155 Walnut Bottom Road Carlisle, PA 17015 with Rev. Alan Robinson officiating. Burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Meeting House or to the Society of American Foresters, 101 Laureate Way Bathesda, MD 20814-2198.
