Fred E. McCoy, 76, died Friday, May 3, 2019 after a battle with cancer.
Mr. McCoy was born in Boiling Springs to Herman and Janet McCoy. He was a graduate of Boiling Springs High School and attended Penn State University before enlisting in the United States Air Force and training as a meteorologist. He was stationed in France and then Britain, where he met his wife, Elaine.
Fred returned to the states after his discharge from the USAF as a sergeant, working for Reeves Hoffman in Carlisle. He held numerous positions ranging from Controller, CFO and Head of Sales before retiring from the company.
While he was a skilled photographer of his travels and family, Fred was most notably a master gardener. He was able to turn his avocation into a retirement job, working as the perennial plant manager at a local plant center. A move to a house with a larger lot permitted him to indulge in a spectacular garden of his own. He loved to visit famous gardens on trips to Britain, as well as stateside venues like Longwood. Fred was also a prolific reader, enjoying history, science and horticulture. He also never lost his interest in meteorology.
Fred was active as a congregant with the Carlisle First Church of the Brethren.
Surviving Fred is his beloved wife of 51 years, Elaine McCoy. He leaves a devoted daughter, Janet; his brothers, Ken McCoy and Galen Bonebrake; sisters, Barbara Younger, Phyllis Irwin and Martha Calaman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Animals were an important part of Fred’s life: he leaves a household of cats and a dog who are missing him.
Services will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carlisle First Church of the Brethren, 1340 Forge Road, Carlisle. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service.
