Francis T. “Fritz” Brown, age 89, of Reading, passed away Friday, January 5, 2018 in Reading, PA.
He was born May 10, 1928 in Sunbury, PA to the late Albert O. and Marie A. (Spotts) Brown, and was the widower of the late Lorraine M. (Purcell) Brown, to whom he was married for 56 years, and who passed on April 21, 2006.
Francis, or “Fritz” as many knew him, retired as Vice Principal of the Carlisle Intermediate High School. Prior to that position, he worked as a teacher in the Carlisle Area School District. He was a Sunbury High School graduate, a 1952 graduate of Bloomsburg University where he received a BS in education, and a 1964 graduate of Oklahoma State University, earning a Master of Education degree.
Fritz proudly served his country in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He was a former member of American Legion Post #109 in Mechanicsburg, VFW Post 477 in Carlisle, and Alvernia University Seniors College in Reading. In his spiritual life, he was a member at St. Catharine of Siena Parish in Reading. Prior to that he was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Carlisle, where he served on Parish Council. Fritz was a lifelong Phillies fan. He was also an avid and enthusiastic reader about the Civil War. His likeable sense of humor and positive attitude made him a joy to be around. He was a wonderful father and family man. He will be missed by many.
He is survived by: his daughter, Vanessa Culbertson (and husband Scott); his brother, Michael Brown; grandchildren, Brooke Culbertson-Weiser (and husband Eric), Bethany Holtzman (and husband Mark), and Andrew Culbertson; and great-grandchildren, Henry and Sadie Holtzman. In addition to his wife and parents, Francis was preceded in death by his brothers Jerry, Jack, Robert and Albert Brown, and his sister Carol Strickland.
Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at St. Patricks Catholic Shrine Church, 152 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA with the Very Reverend William C. Forrey officiating. Interment will follow at Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army - 20 E. Pomfret Street, Carlisle, PA 17013, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
