Florence Smith "Sissy" Miller, 79, of Carlisle died at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center on Friday, April 24, 2015. She was born in Chambersburg on June 5, 1935 to her parents the late R. Paul and Catherine (Walker) Smith. Florence was the wife of James F. Miller of Carlisle. Florence and Jim celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on November 28, 2014.
She graduated from Shippensburg High School in 1952 and the former Shippensburg State Teachers College in 1956. She taught first grade at two schools in Carlisle, the Penn Building from 1956-1959 and the Mooreland Elementary School from 1959 -1967. She then taught for ChildTime SAC in the Bellaire Elementary School from 1990-1992. Florence was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Carlisle and was previously a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Shippensburg. She was also a former member of the A.A.U.W., Delta Kappa Gamma and the Junior Civic Club.
In addition to her loving husband Jim, Florence is survived by a daughter Catherine "Cassie" M. Salomone and her husband Frank of Carlisle and a son, James F. "J.F." Miller and his wife Jamie of Carlisle. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Sophia C. and Salvatore F. Salomone and Coleman J. and Abigail L. Miller, a brother Robert P. Smith of North Oaks, MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday May 2, 2015 at the First United Church of Christ, 30 North Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA 17013. Reverend Chris Schwab will officiate. Family and friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
