Erma L. Gebb, 93, of Carlisle, PA and formerly of Westminster, MD, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 24, 2016, at Elmcroft of Dillsburg surrounded by the love of family and friends. She was born December 19, 1922 in Carroll County, MD to the late John D. and Marian Dotterer Young and was the widow of Nelson W. Gebb.
Erma was a graduate of New Windsor High School and Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College). She began her career in social work at the YWCA in Philadelphia and then served in similar positions in Philadelphia and Baltimore. After raising her children, she received a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Pittsburgh and served as a Social Worker for the Pittsburgh City School System and the Office of Aging, Carroll County, MD. After retirement, Erma worked at Piney Run Park in Carroll County as both staff and volunteer. She was named Volunteer of the Year in 1985 and 1999. In addition, she served for 20 years on the Board of Directors of the Carroll Area Transit System. She had a lifelong interest in the natural world, music, and sports. She was an avid gardener, birder, singer, supporter of the arts, and Orioles fan.
She is survived by a son, Wayne (Billie Anne) Gebb of Lexington, KY; a daughter, Wendy (Cheryl Parsons) Gebb; three grandchildren, Marianne, Charlie and Joey Gebb; siblings, Thelma Flippin of Decatur, GA, Stewart D. (Gail) Young of Westminster, MD, Ruby Bechtold of Manchester, CT, many nieces and nephews and a number of devoted friends which she considered as family. In addition to her parents and husband, Erma was preceded in death by siblings, John D. Young, Jr., Ralph Young, Dorothy Henderson, Betty Wise and Margaret Whitacre.
Per her request, a memorial service will be held at the Nature Center of Piney Run Park, Carroll County, MD, on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 11 a.m. Following the service there will be a picnic lunch and continued celebration of her life in Pavilion 4.
