Elwood A. Thumma, age 89, of Carlisle, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Thornwald Home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born August 9, 1928 in Franklin Township/Cumberland County to the late Abraham Otis and Levina Sarah (Leer) Thumma, and was the widower of the late Sara K. (nee Downes) Thumma, to whom he was married for 64 years, and who passed on November 9, 2016.
Elwood retired after 43 years of service with the Carlisle Tire and Rubber. He was a member of the First Church of The Brethren, Carlisle. He was Honorably discharged from the Air National Guard. Elwood helped organize the first little league baseball in Middlesex Township in the early 1960’s. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and spending time with his loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by: his son, Elwood A. “Pete” (and wife Rebecca) Thumma II of Carlisle; brother, Donald (and wife Nancy) Thumma; sisters, Charlotte Dyer, Freda Franklin, Margaret Anderson, Mary Hornberger, and Betty Miller; two grandchildren, Tyler David (and wife Laura) Thumma of Mechanicsburg and Janelle Kathryn Myers (and husband Cory) of Lansing, MI; two great-grandchildren, Landyn and Audrey; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Elwood was preceded in death by his brothers Richard and Raymond Thumma.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA with Pastors Jim and Marla Abe officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Cemetery. There will be a visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.
