Elizabeth Harnett (“Betty”) Bowes , 90, of Carlisle, and formerly of Fair Lawn, NJ, died Monday, March 24, 2025 at Cumberland Crossing Retirement Community, where she had been a beloved resident for many years.
Born in Jersey City, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Edwin and Janet (Hance) Harnett and wife of the late Thomas M. Bowes, who passed away in 2021.
Betty was a 1952 graduate of Fair Lawn High School in Fair Lawn, NJ, and became a registered nurse before she married her husband, Thomas, in 1956. She moved all around the world 27 times as an Army wife, raising her family, working as a nurse, and playing an active role in every community she lived in.
After raising her own children to adulthood, Betty went to college and obtained her bachelor’s degree in nursing. When Tom retired from the Army, he and Betty settled in Carlisle, where she lovingly cared for her aged aunt, and for her mother, until the end of their lives. Betty worked for many years at Claremont Nursing & Rehab when it was the county home.
Betty enjoyed reading, socializing with friends and family, and she served as President of the former PWOC (Protestant Women of the Chapel) at Carlisle Barracks. She was an active member of Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle for many years.
Survivors include her children: Janet Goodyear (husband, F. Stephen), of Marysville, Carolyn Bowes (husband, Duncan Stephens), of Skokie, Illinois, Thomas H. Bowes, of Carlisle; her grandchildren: Amelia Goodyear, Sarah Goodyear (husband, Dimitri Papazoglou), Patrick Goodyear (wife, Trieu Pham), Benjamin Goodyear, Lily Calder (husband, Michael) and Fiona Stephens, as well as three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her brother, Dennis Harnett, and her sister-in-law, Gigi Bowes.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 26, 2025 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive Carlisle, PA 17013. Interment will be private and held at the Second Presbyterian Interment Garden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Betty to Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Drive Carlisle,PA 17013.
