Eleanor P. Smith

January 24, 1931 — February 21, 2022

Eleanor P. Smith, 91, of Carlisle and formerly of Newville, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2022, while surrounded by her loving family.
She was born January 24, 1931, in Ligonier to the late James Edward and Mary Emma (Wilson) Hoffer. Eleanor was the widow of Gerald C. Smith to whom she was married for 61 years before he passed in October of 2011.
Eleanor met the love of her life at a square dance on a typical Saturday night. She devoted her life to God, her husband Gerald, and her five children. She delighted in her grandchildren and in her later years, holding her precious great grandchildren brought her the most joy.
She learned hard work at an early age by helping her parents on the family farm. She often recalled her days of bailing hay alongside her dad. Getting up before dawn to bring in the cows, and milking while singing harmony with her sister before heading to school. After high school, she continued helping on the farm and even milked the cows on her wedding day.
Outside of the home, she worked for Gerald at Buster's Egg Farm. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, and was especially fond of growing flowers. Folks often stopped by to ask her about her beautiful landscaping. Eleanor was a longtime active member of the Newville Church of the Brethren.
Eleanor is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. (husband Dale Jr.) George of Carlisle; one son, William J. (wife Judy) Smith of Carlisle; five grandchildren, Phillip (wife Sarah) George of Mechanicsburg, Timothy (wife Samantha) George of Carlisle, David (wife Katrina) Smith of Chambersburg, Alysia (husband Edward) Griffith of Carlisle, Allison (husband Maxwell) Whitticar of Leesburg, VA; eight great-grandchildren, Carter, Henry, Daniel, Kaylin, Jacob, Natalie, Alyvia, Addison; one step-great-granddaughter, Tiffany (husband Jared) Rasmussen and their three sons, James, Aaron, and Henry of Shippensburg; three sisters, Clara “Sis” Weimer, Betty (husband Gerald) Warren, and Lois “Eileen” (husband Ted) Goodman all of Ligonier; two sons in law, John Wilson of Conway, MA and Thomas George of West Boylston, MA; one daughter in law, Brenda Smith of Mt. Holly Springs; and one sister in law, Geraldine Hoffer of Ligonier. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Susan George and Cheryl (Wilson) Smith; one son, James Smith; two brothers, James E. Jr. and Leonard Hoffer; and one sister, Helen Knupp.
