Edward K. Masland

March 5, 1929 — August 30, 2011

Edward "Skip" Masland, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at his home in Carlisle.

Born in Carlisle on March 5, 1929, Skip was the youngest of four in the family of Robert Paul and Ruth Sample Masland. He attended Carlisle schools until high school, when he transferred to Valley Forge Military Academy, but ultimately found his bearings at The Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J. Masland received his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College, where he met and married Sarah "Sally" Haddock from Wilmington, Del., in 1952.

As the youngest male in the fourth generation of the C.H. Masland & Sons family, the opportunities for one more Mr. Masland at the carpet plant were slim. Skip took a different business path, starting as a salesman with the St. Regis Paper Company in 1955. In 1965, after being promoted to Regional Sales Manager, he struck out on his own and formed Carlisle Container Company, a corrugated box manufacturer. He built the business into a success, manufacturing custom-sized corrugated boxes and containers for companies throughout the region. Although not in carpet, Skip followed the family mindset by keeping his employees first.

Upon selling the business in 1986, Skip and Sally enjoyed retirement and their involvement with many community organizations. The bulk of their time and energy was devoted to their three children and grandchildren, who knew him lovingly as "Haboo."

After his beloved Sally died in 1999, Skip continued to golf and travel, but was a fixture at all of his grandchildren's activities, including soccer, lacrosse and field hockey events.

Skip and Sally supported numerous community organizations, including the Carlisle Family YMCA, the Cumberland County Historical Society and the Bosler Memorial Library. They were long-time supporters of academic institutions like Mercersburg Academy and their beloved Dickinson College, but Skip's favorite was "steady old" Peddie, where he was an active trustee for almost three decades. However, next to his love of family, Second Presbyterian Church was closest to his heart, where, in addition to being a member for 70 years, he had served as trustee.

He is survived by three children, Edward "Skip" Masland Jr. and his wife, Sherri, and their two children Haley and Shelby of Casselberry, Fla.; Albert H. Masland and his wife, Deborah, and their three children Albie, Sarah (and her husband Kevin Fatherree) and Hilary of Carlisle; and Ruth "Mimi" Hesse and her husband, William, and five children Eddie, Julie and Christina Brown and Keagan and Sally Hesse, of Carlisle.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Dr., Carlisle where the memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Skip's church, Second Presbyterian Church, 528 Garland Dr., Carlisle, PA 17013 or the Carlisle Family YMCA, 311 S. West St., Carlisle, PA 17013.

Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
