Edward J. Dowd, age 84, of Carlisle, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at the Sarah A. Todd Memorial Home.
He was born October 13, 1933 in Carlisle to the late Earl W. and Jennie (Sutton) Dowd.
Edward was a 1951 graduate of Carlisle High School where he participated in track and field events. In 1950 he was a gold medal recipient in the team relay race at the district competition and in 1951, he was a state gold medal recipient in the 1-mile team relay race. Edward honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Edward retired from Penn National Insurance as a claims adjuster after 28 years of employment. He was a gifted athlete and a huge sports enthusiast. Edward and his brothers were the recipients of the Carlisle High School Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994-1995 and he was inducted in to the South-Central Chapter Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. Ed was a member of Carlisle Elks BPO Lodge #578, Carlisle Moose Lodge #761, Carlisle AMVETS and First United Church of Christ.
He is survived by: his wife of 52 years, Anita F. (Flickinger) Dowd of Carlisle; a son, Steven E. Dowd of Carlisle; a brother, Charles M. (wife Muriel) Dowd of Newville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by four brothers, Richard, Robert, Earl and David and a sister, Lucille.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 22, 2018 ay First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA with Revs. Chris R. and Rachel H. Schwab officiating. Burial will follow at Letort Cemetery. There will be a visitation at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Church of Christ.
