MECHANICSBURG—Earl R. Weirich (93), formerly of Chesapeake, VA, died March 22 at Pinnacle West Shore Hospital in Mechanicsburg, PA. He was a writer and then former city editor at The Patriot News for 29 years.
He later was a copy editor for The Daily Oklahoman before becoming public relations director and then a vice president of The Family Channel Television Network in Virginia Beach, Va. In that capacity he promoted the channel’s programs with various print media while traveling with the actors and writers of those programs. Throughout these careers he also did freelance writing for various magazines.
He served briefly in the U.S. Marine Corps and then graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism in Philadelphia. He was one of the founders of The Teen Challenge Center in Harrisburg. He did prison ministry and other functions of its ministry for several years. He was also a frequent speaker at Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship in the Northeast and Midwest. A native of Middletown, he is a current member of Compass Point Church in Dillsburg.
Earl was preceded in death by his son, Larry Weirich of Duncannon, formerly of Middletown. He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Ginger) Weirich; a daughter, Lisa Kuhn of Mechanicsburg; a stepson, Steven Colclough of Hoover, Alabama; six granddaughters, two step-grandsons and seven great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA 17013. Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. As mandated by Governor Wolfe maximum capacity during gatherings is restricted and you may be asked to wait at the door when you arrive until the numbers allow for your entrance.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Earl to Teen Challenge Harrisburg, 2400 North 6th Street Harrisburg, PA 17110.
