Duane Lloyd Wood

Duane Lloyd Wood, affectionately known as” Woody” or “Tank” by family and friends, passed into Life Eternal with his Lord on Sunday November 28, 2021.
Duane was born August 28, 1941, to Harry Monroe Wood and Helen May (Kistler) Wood in Gettysburg PA. The family lived in Biglerville, Pa until 1944 then moving to Lemoyne Pa where he spent his formative years in elementary and high school. His grandparents were Walter and Edna Wood, owners of Walter Wood Dairy.
Woody is survived by his wife, Sharon L Wood of Carlisle Pa, brother Earl Wood and his wife Norma of Jefferson City, Md, daughter Susanna Wood of Mechanicsburg PA, son Steven Wood, and his son Tyler of Elliotsburg Pa, son Jeffrey Wood and his wife Rhonda and their sons Jaydenn and Daniel of Boiling Springs Pa. Stepchildren Karen Miller, Carlisle Pa, Terry Bell- Aby South Carolina, James Bell Florida and his two well loved Airedale Terriers Wilson and Grace.
Woody graduated from West Shore High School in 1959. He excelled in football, basketball and baseball. As a young boy Woody played little league baseball for the West Shore Lions Club and was known as “Wizard Wood”
Being a baseball pitcher, while in high school, college and Marine Corp., was a passion and he continued to be an avid enthusiast especially for the Washington Nationals attending many of their home games as well as the home games of the Harrisburg Senators.
Woody attended the University of Richmond and remained loyal to the Spiders basketball team and followed the Washington Football Team (formerly Redskins).
Woody served in the United States Marines Corp from March 1961 through March 1965. During his service time he graduated from Aviation Electronics Technical School at Naval Air Technical Training Center, Memphis Tenn then served as a radar technician with the aviation branch of the Marine Corp as a LCpl (E-3) at Cherry Point, NC. Following his discharge from active service, he was in the reserves at Marine Air Reserve Training Command NAS, Glenview Ill, being honorably discharged in March 1967. He was decorated with the Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Marksmanship Badge.
Through the State of Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Woody was employed as a Children/Youth and Family program Specialist, as a Counselor at Loysville Youth Development Center and as a Claims Investigation Agent.
Woody was passionate about enjoying life to the fullest and took every opportunity to be blessed and enjoying the gifts given to him. He loved to play games including Pinochle, Farkle, Sequence, and Scrabble. He loved to sing all the time, anything from childhood songs to well known tunes. When the music came into his head, he would sing with joy.
He loved to hunt with family and friends, frequenting the western United States with his sons, but hunting in Perry County with his sons, brother, nephew and friends held a special attachment for him.
Woody supported the Little Theater of Mechanicsburg and loved attending the Harrisburg Symphony, always grateful for the many talents God gives to His people.
Woody was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lemoyne Pa as a young boy, then Center Presbyterian Church in Loysville Pa and then Second Presbyterian Church in Carlisle Pa. He attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Carlisle Pa and the Carlisle Quaker Meeting.
At Second Presbyterian Church Woody sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, a Bible Study leader, a Christ Care leader and a Stephen Minister. Dear to his heart was guiding people seeking to enrich their walk with the Lord through Lectio Divina, a contemplative practice of scriptural reading to promote one’s journey in communing with the Lord.
At St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Woody was involved with serving Wednesday evening dinners to people in need from the Carlisle community. He also offered a weekly devotional on St. Paul’s face book site, reaching out to people through scripture and sharing the Lord’s love.
Woody was involved with a monthly contemplative Prayer Group which met at St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg Pa and participated in the Lehigh Valley Wisdom, embracing the wisdom way of knowing.
In October 2010 Woody took his Spiritual Direction training through the Oasis Ministries and graduated from the Spiritual Direction for Spiritual Guides program in 2012. He has since been a Spiritual Director, guiding people in their spiritual journey through contemplative Christian listening.
Woody was trained to the Master level of the Usui lineage of Reiki, a holistic healing art. He was a Reiki practitioner since October 2012.
Among all of Woodys’ experiences, he treasured the 4 years (1992 to 1996) he lived on his sailboat “Dream Chaser” and sailed the intercoastal waterways of the eastern United States.
Family connections was very important to Woody and he loved attending the Kistler and the Wood family reunions. Friend connections was equally important and as many people who have passed through his life, constants were the Quigley brothers from Perry County whom he has known for 78 years.
To people who knew and loved Woody he was always honest, always positive, slow to anger if ever, not afraid to be open and vulnerable, always helpful and loving to others, invoked a gentle strength yet vibrant to the beauty and richness of his life. Woody had a beautiful sense of humor, loving to laugh and make a pun or joke to anyone listening. Above all, loving his Lord was the fulfillment of daily life. His enthusiasm for life spilled into the life of anyone who came into contact with him.
Woody saw life here on earth as a gift from God and he lived through that gift enriched by God’s love and grace, all the while accepting that his place in life is to live with his Lord in Eternity.
Memorial Service will be held on Saturday December 18, 2021, at 1:00 PM at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg Pa. Masks are required to enter the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Carlisle Community Cares, Carlisle Pa, Gettysburg CARES, Gettysburg Pa or Project Share, Carlisle Pa.
