Dr. Mark S. Lewis

November 5, 1951 — August 18, 2017

Dr. Mark S. Lewis passed away Friday, August 18, 2017 at his home in Carlisle, Pennsylvania surrounded by his family. Mark was born November 5, 1951 in Danville, PA to Doris (Conrad) Lewis and the late Trevor Lewis, both of Northumberland.
Mark was a graduate of Shikellamy High School, Sunbury, PA. He received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Penn State University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Bucknell University. In addition, he received a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. For more than 40 years Mark dedicated his professional life to the furtherance of education, first as a high school English teacher, later as a high school principal, and finally as a district superintendent. In teaching roles at Dickinson College, Fordham University, and Shippensburg University, Mark passed on his vast knowledge to future teachers and school superintendents. He was also a consultant to various federally funded state agencies whose mission was to promote active parental participation in schools.
Forever a Nittany Lions football fan, Mark was also a dedicated supporter of Penn State University. He most recently served as a member of the Penn State Library Board and, with his wife, Elizabeth, established the Mark S. and Elizabeth C. Lewis Family Fund in the University Libraries. Through his work as a Rotary Club member and as past president of the Rotary Club in Brewster, New York, Mark expressed a deep commitment to civic initiatives. He also held board memberships with the Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium Advisory Board and Keystone Human Services.
In addition to his mother, Mark is survived by his wife of eleven years, Dr. Elizabeth (Meehan) Lewis; two sons, Mark (wife Mae) Lewis of Kirkland, WA and Michael Lewis of Darien, CT; a brother, Dr. Trevor Lewis (partner Dr. Matthew Goulet) of New York City; and five grandchildren, Norman, Madison, Sophia, Miles, and John.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mark S. and Elizabeth C. Lewis Family Fund in the University Libraries, 508 Paterno Library, University Park, PA 16823.
