Donald Leer Thumma, age 97 formerly of Boiling Springs, passed away November 30, 2020 at Cumberland Crossings Retirement Community. Born August 11, 1923 in Newville, son of the late Abraham Otis and Lovina Sarah (Leer) Thumma. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, who passed away in 2019.
Donald was a retired wilton weaver and dryer operator for Masland’s Carpet. He was a Blue Devil with the 88th Infantry of the US Army and a purple heart recipient. His experience as a young soldier in WWII has been documented and archived at the Army Heritage Center and the Purple Heart Museum. He was also a life member of the VFW and DAV and was a member of the former St. James Lutheran Church. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. Don loved working on small engines and was very creative and inventive.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Mary Alice (Keith) Williamson, Carlisle and Lois Ann (Robert) Ilardi, Inwood, WV; 2 grandchildren Emily (Joseph) Mozdy, Boiling Springs and Adam Leer (Lauren) Wilson, Bunker Hill, WV; 2 great-grandchildren Blakely and Avalee; sisters, Charlotte Dyer, Halifax, Freda (Rev. Kenneth) Franklin, St Thomas, Mary Hornberger, Lebanon and Betty Miller, Newville.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard, Raymond and Elwood Thumma and sister, Margaret Anderson.
Due to Coivd-19 restrictions, viewing and service will be private at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at the Brick Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans, in Don’s name.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory 2020 W. Trindle Rd Carlisle.
