Donald Davis Wagner, Sr., 86, of Carlisle, died Sunday, January 5, 2014 at his home.
Born January 1, 1928 in Baltimore, MD, he was a son of the late Charles H. Sr. and Martha M. Shedlock Wagner and the widower of Winifred Gabrio Wagner.
He owned and operated Wagner's Grocery in Baltimore from 1961-1999. He also worked in the printing industries with Baltimore Type. Donald was a US Navy veteran of WWII and a US Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel of Locust Point, MD, also a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. He helped to coach South Baltimore Little League. Donald enjoyed fishing and boating and was a football fan for the Baltimore Colts and the Ravens, the New England Patriots and also US Navy football. He was a fan of the Orioles and Boston Red Sox. From 2002 until just recently he was a volunteer at St. Patrick School, Carlisle. He also enjoyed reading and learning about the Civil War.
Surviving are his daughter, Mary Gronkiewicz (and husband, Dr. Bruce V.) of Carlisle; two sons, Donald Wagner, Jr. and David Albert Wagner, both of Baltimore, MD; ten grandchildren: Matthew, Danielle, Robert, Brittany, Donald III, Henry, Albert, Charlotte, Brian, and Mary Catherine; and one sister-in-law, Frieda Koubeck (and husband, Joseph) of Timonium, MD. Also his loving niece and two nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Charles and Albert Wagner, Evelyn Wagner, and Doris Cohen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2014 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 85 Marsh Drive, Carlisle with Rev. William C. Forrey as celebrant. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. in the New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Road, Baltimore, MD. A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, January 10, 2014 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle with Rosary Service to follow.
