David Sharp Masland, Md

David Sharp Masland, MD died April 2, 2014. Born in Carlisle on October 24, 1923, he was the son of Frank and Virginia Masland. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Strayer Masland, and children David Jr. and wife Mary, Janet Masland and husband Lawrence Keating, Barbara "Kim" Bollinger and husband David and grandchildren, David Masland III and wife Ann, Melissa Benkovic, Benjamin Keating, Elizabeth Keating, Bridget Keating, Sallie Bohlen and Annie Bohlen and extended family David Bollinger III and Amy Morgan and four great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Jane Lore Masland.
Dr. Masland is a graduate of the Carlisle High School, The Peddie School, Princeton University and The Thomas Jefferson School of Medicine where he received a Doctor of Medicine in 1948. He then completed a rotating internship at Cooper Hospital in Camden, New Jersey.
In 1950 Dr. Masland volunteered for the Korean War and was stationed for two years as a Lt. J.G. at the 5th Naval District Headquarters, Panama. He returned to Cooper Hospital in 1951 where he served as a resident of Internal Medicine and attended the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania obtaining a Master's Degree in Science. He was Board Certified in Internal Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Physicians Internal Medicine.
From 1954 to 55 he practiced with his Uncle Reuben L. Sharp and taught as an instructor of medicine at Thomas Jefferson University.
In 1955 he moved to Carlisle and established a practice of Internal Medicine which later grew into Masland Associates. During his first ten years of solo practice he worked at the Army War College covering nights and weekends while he built his practice. During his years as a staff member at the Carlisle Hospital he served as Chief of the Medical Department and as President of the staff. During his tenure he established the Heart Station and the Pulmonary Center. He was one of the promoters of the Intensive Care Unit and after being trained at the Graduate Hospital of Pennsylvania, introduced endoscopy to the Carlisle Hospital. This became a special interest of his and led to his becoming a fellow of the American College of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
He retired from Masland Associates in 1990. Following retirement he and his wife did several medical missions in Central America, Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala and a Ute Indian Reservation in Utah.
Under the auspices of the Carlisle Hospital Dr. Masland formed the Sadler Adult Health Clinic which became a rewarding service for him for the next thirteen years.
For some years Dr. Masland was active in organized medicine serving as the youngest trustee of the Pennsylvania Medical Society up until that time. During the years 1975 to 1976 he served as President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society and was one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Liability Insurance Company where he served as Board Chairman and CEO for thirteen years.
Dr. Masland has also been involved with the conservation movement since he was a teenager. He served two years as Vice-Chairman of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. During this time he was one of the enthusiasts who spearheaded the preservation of the Holly Gap Preserve. As a board member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Nature Conservancy he was one of a group who led the effort to create Seven Gables Park. Dr. Masland was actively involved in the formation of the The Clean Air Board in Carlisle. Most recently he has been involved in the preservation of the Craighead House.
Other community interests include; life member of Allison United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and a number of other councils.
Under Governor Shafer he served as a member of the Governor's safety traffic council.
He also was privileged to serve on the Samaritan Fellowship Board, Maranatha Board and the Sarah Todd Board.
Among his honors are the Alex de Tocqueville Humanitarian of the year award 2002, The Central Pa. Conservancy, Conservationist of the year award 2003 and the Pa. Chapter of Trout Unlimited Limestoner Award 2007.
Funeral services will be held at the Second Presbyterian Church of Carlisle on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jennifer J. McKenna officiating. Burial will be held privately at the Mt Holly Springs Cemetery.
