David Edward Karper, age 87, of Carlisle, passed away on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born on May 29, 1928 in Shippensburg to the late David and Pauline E. Koser Karper and was the widower of the late Charlotte J. Kling Karper who passed on October 17, 2003.
David was a 1946 graduate of Shippensburg High School and attended Shippensburg University. He was the first person from Shippensburg to be drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict and was in the United States Army Band. David retired from the Prudential Insurance Company in Carlisle on February 1, 1987 where he had been an insurance agent and a manager for 29 years. He was a co-founder of the Cumberland County Life Underwriters Association and a former member of the Harrisburg Life Underwriters Association. He was a member of First United Church of Christ in Carlisle where he was a Deacon and Elder, the Carlisle Town Band, the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315, F&AM of Shippensburg and the Harrisburg Consistory. David was an avid golfer and loved to play as often as he could. He enjoyed reading, was a dog lover and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Alan D. (and wife Cathy) Karper of Carlisle; a daughter, Jane L. (and husband James) Kingsborough of Carlisle; a sister, Patricia Ann Shatzer of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren, Cara A. and Austin D. Karper and Kyle J. Kingsborough.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2016 at First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Chris Schwab officiating. There will be a private interment at Westminster Cemetery. A visitation with the family will be held at the church after the service.
