David B. Eavenson, Jr.

March 13, 1947 — April 19, 2018

David “Buddy” B. Eavenson Jr., age 71, of Carlisle, passed away at his residence on Thursday, April 19, 2018, with his loving family by his side.

Dave has spent 48 years in athletics and education. He graduated from Carlisle High School in 1965; received his Bachelor of Science degree from West Chester University in 1969; and received his M.A. degree from West Virginia University in 1977.

He had a career in education as a teacher, coach, high school and middle school administrator and athletic administrator. He held positions at Big Spring High School, Jefferson-Morgan High School, Boiling Springs High School, Carlisle High School and Cumberland Valley High School. He was also an interim associate athletic director for Shippensburg University. In addition to coaching at the high school level, he was an assistant football coach at Dickinson College for 10 years. He was involved with the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association for over 35 years and became the Executive Director in July 2015.

He has received many awards and recognitions throughout the years. In 1974, Dave was the recipient of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Dapper Dan Coach of the Year Award for Football. He was named Carlisle High School Distinguished Alumnus and was inducted into the South Central Sports Hall of Fame, West Chester University Football Hall of Fame, and Pennsylvania State Athletic Director Association Hall of Fame. He was also named the State Athletic Director of the Year in 2000.

Dave has also been active within his community throughout the years including serving on the boards of the Cumberland/Perry Drug and Alcohol Commission, Carlisle Parks and Recreation Department, James Wilson Safe Harbour Bridge Housing, Carlisle Victory Circle, Carlisle Bison Foundation, Carlisle Basketball Classic, and Carlisle Cares About Youth. He was also an active member and treasurer of the PIAA Central Pennsylvania Track and Field Officials organization.

He was dedicated to his family and was passionate about his roles in education, athletics and community service.

Dave is survived by his loving wife Marianne “Mimi” (McMillin); sons, David and his wife Jennifer of Fayetteville, NC and Jon of Carlisle, PA; brother, Robert J. Sr. and his wife Diane of Fairfax, VA; sister-in-law, Sally McMillin Stone and her husband Lee of Annandale, VA; and his beloved grandchildren, Tyler and Sarah Eavenson of Fayetteville, NC.

Also surviving are nieces. Kimberly Eavenson Allen and husband Timothy, and Julie Stone Buschman and husband Frank; nephews, Robert J. Eavenson, Jr., Dr. Michael J. Stone and wife Carolyn, and Peter J. Stone and wife Cady; great nieces and nephews, Elizabeth and Katherine Allen, Madeleine, Lillian and Nora Buschman, Benjamin and Harrison Stone and Luke Stone.

Funeral services for Dave will be held at 11:00 am Friday, April 27, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church, 2 N. Hanover St., Carlisle with The Reverend Anthony Lorenz officiating.

There will be two viewings on Thursday; 12:00 - 2:00 pm and 5:00 - 7:30 pm, at the Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle PA 17013 and another viewing will be from 10:00 am Friday until the time of the services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dave’s honor to Homeland at Home Hospice, 2300 Vartan Way, Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle.
