Colonel (Retired) James Henry Lovett

Colonel (Retired) James Henry Lovett, 90, of Newville, died January, 19, 2014 at Green Ridge Village, Newville.
Born 17 October 1923 in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the son of James H. and Annie McGovern Lovett.
He was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he received a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering and Harvard University where he received his Master's Degree in Public Health. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He served during World War II in the European Theater as an Infantry officer (2nd Lt. through Captain) in the 84 Infantry Division including combat campaigns in northern France, the Ardennes and central Europe. Recalled to active duty in 1950, he served in Vietnam during three combat campaigns as senior Sanitary Engineer, Headquarters, US Army, Vietnam.
His assignments were primarily in Research and Development and in numerous Army Headquarters. He served as an in instructor at the Medical Field Service School and the Walter Reed Army Medical Service Graduate School. Headquarters assignments included the 2nd Logistical Command, Pusan, Korea, 18th Airborne Corps, Sendai, Japan: 3rd Army, Atlanta, GA: USAREUR, Heidelberg, Germany. He served as Chief of the Sanitary Engineering Division and later as the Director of Engineering Services at the US Army Environmental Hygiene Agency which is a Class 11 activity under the Surgeon General, Dept. of the Army.
He received numerous awards and decorations' including the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Combat Infantry man's Badge.
He was a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Rhode Island: a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers; National Society of Professional Engineers, Conference of Federal Sanitary Engineers: American Waterworks Association and the Water Pollution Control Federation.
Surviving are three sons, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Gregory A. Lovett of Godfrey, IL, Bruce J. Lovett (and wife, Pamela) of Palmyra, and James S. Lovett, four grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Patricia O'Brien Lovett, and two sons, Jeffery P. Lovett and Gary A. Lovett as well as two sisters, Mrs. Mary Drury and Mrs. Anne Schultz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 27, 2014 at Mary Queen of Peace Chapel, Carlisle Barracks with CH (Col) Gregory J. D'Emma as celebrant. Burial in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville with full military honors. A viewing will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle.
