Colonel Leonard A. “Len” Spirito (RET) died on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.
He was born in Philadelphia on July 28, 1927, the son of the late Americo and Angela Spirito. He is survived by: his wife Virginia, to whom he was lovingly married for 62 years; three daughters, Laura, Pamela, and Sabrina; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Colonel Spirito was preceded in death by three sisters: Marion, Martha and Clara.
Colonel Spirito entered the U.S. Army as a Private in 1945 through the Selective Service System and stayed on continuous active duty for 34 years. During that time, he served in the ranks from Private to Master Sergeant, and from 2nd Lieutenant through Colonel in the Infantry, Armor and Intelligence branches. Colonel Spirito served in Europe, Korea and Vietnam, and received several U.S. and foreign awards and decorations. The award he was most proud of was the Combat Infantry Badge.
He graduated from Edison College, The Army Command and General Staff College, The Department of Defense Language School, and the Army War College at Carlisle, PA. He was a member of the Outpost Harry Survivors Association (Korea), the 15th Infantry Regiment Association, and the 2nd Cavalry Regiment Association. He was also a lifetime member of the Army War College Alumni Association.
Following his retirement from the Army in 1979, he was employed by several corporations as an international security advisor, and traveled extensively worldwide.
Funeral services for Colonel Spirito will be held at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Rd, Carlisle, PA on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a viewing at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be announced.
