Clifton L. Mercer

Clifton L. “Clif” Mercer, age 84, of Carlisle, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2017 at his residence.
He was born March 27, 1933 in Kabletown, West Virginia to the late Joseph and Viola (Clingenberger) Mercer and was the widower of Phyllis M. (Kidwell) Mercer.
A 1951 graduate of Charlestown High School, Clifton retired from Kinney Shoes, after serving for 41 years, last holding the title of Director and General Manager. For 10 years after retiring, he worked part-time for the Carlisle Housing Authority. He was a longtime member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was active outside his work life, holding the honor of being a 32nd degree Mason at St. John’s Lodge #260. He was a member of Zembo Shrine and Harrisburg Consistory. He was a lifetime member of the 210 Club, and Moose Lodge #761 in Carlisle. He served as past Treasurer of the Carlisle Elks #578, and Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. As well, he was a member of the Carlisle White Circle, Eagles # 1299, and VFW #477.
He is survived by: his son, Jeff S. Mercer of Mt Holly Springs; his daughter, Terri (and husband Al) Shields of Lutz, FL; brother, Phillip Mercer of Martinsburg, WV; sister-in-law, Anna Lea Barthlow of Martinsburg, WV; granddaughters, Amber Hohman (and husband Robert), and Kelley Mercer of St. Louis, MO; great-grandchildren, Garrett Thomas and Lilley Hohman; a step-granddaughter, Amy Enders of Dover; and a step-great-granddaughter, Adleigh Beam. In addition to his parents and wife, Clifton was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Brown and Anna Reese.
A funeral service with Masonic ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory - 2020 West Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA, with Pastor Matthew Plant officiating. Burial will follow at Westminster Cemetery - 1159 Newville Road, Carlisle, PA. There will be a viewing at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Clifton’s honor may be made to Celtic Hospice - 900 Century Drive, Suite 201, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
