Charles W. Van Bebber, 60, of Carlisle, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019 in his home.
He was born February 13, 1959 in Kirkland, WA to Elizabeth Lue (Fritch) Van Bebber and the late Truman Troy Van Bebber.
Charles retired from the US Army as a Colonel in 2014 after a career of more than thirty years. He started his career in Military Intelligence and eventually became a Foreign Area Officer specializing in the Balkans and Eastern Europe. Charles formerly worked in HQEUCOM, the office of the Secretary of Defense and later as a professor at the US Army War College. He earned a master’s degree in Soviet History from the University of Washington and a PhD in International Relations from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Charles loved studying history and was writing a book about the history of the US Army War College when he passed. He will be remembered for his terrific sense of humor and for being a voracious reader. Charles was an active member of the USAWC Memorial Chapel and was a past board member for the Carlisle Area Midget Football Association.
He is survived by his mother, his loving wife of 26 years, Susan Van Bebber of Carlisle; one daughter, Elizabeth Van Bebber of Carlisle; and one son, Jonathan Van Bebber of Carlisle. In addition to his father, Charles was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Mirkovich.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 15, 2019 at the USAWC Memorial Chapel, 452 Mara Circle Carlisle, PA 17013 with CH (COL-ret) Arthur C. Pace officiating. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA. There will be no viewing or visitation.
