Colonel Charles “Chuck” Toomey Jr. of Mechanicsburg, PA passed away peacefully on January 9th, 2025 at the age of 67. He is survived by his son, Captain Charles Toomey III, US Army (wife Jordan) of Fort Lee, VA; his former spouse Linda Toomey of Bluffton, SC; siblings Kathleen Harrison of Kent Island, MD; James Toomey of N. Falmouth, MA; and John Toomey (wife Mary) of Glenridge, NJ. He is also survived by several nieces; Erin Harrison, Paige (Harrison) Gadell (husband Greg), Colleen and Michaela Toomey; nephew Sergeant John Toomey Jr., US Marine Corps (wife Peyton) and grandniece Charlotte Gadell. He is also survived by numerous aunts and cousins. Chuck is preceded in death by his parents Colleen Lovejoy of Cranston, RI and Charles Toomey Sr. of Sandwich, MA; his long-time partner and companion Susan Love of Carlisle, PA; brother-in-law Major John Harrison, US Army; a very special and loving cousin Barbie O’Connor, as well as several aunts and uncles.
Chuck’s passions in life were living life to the fullest, proudly serving and defending his country, enjoying family outings, getting to know and make friends for life, and simply spending as much time as possible with his son Charles “Chas”, a 2016 Trinity High School graduate, Eagle Scout, 2020 Hampden-Sydney College graduate, and US Army Officer. Family highlights included cooking together, enjoying an occasional cocktail, traveling the globe, exploring the wonders of the Asia Pacific region, climbing the Great Wall of China, attending sporting events and concerts, and first and foremost, mentoring and admiring his son grow to be the fine young man he is today. In his teens, Chuck attended high school at both Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA and the Choate School in Wallingford, CT. A stand-out three-sport athlete, Chuck was scouted by Major League Baseball, won the New England prep school soccer championship as Choate’s goal-keeper and lettered in varsity hockey for Army at West Point.
Colonel Toomey was a 1980 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering. He also earned a Master’s degree in Logistics Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1997 and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle, PA in 2003. A career logistician, he commanded two companies with the 7th Infantry Division (Light) and a third as an exchange officer in the Australian Defense Force; Battalion Command at Tobyhanna Army Depot, PA; Brigade Command of the Materiel Support Command in the Republic of South Korea, and held numerous senior level staff officer positions throughout his tenure in the Army to include Aide de Camp to the Commanding General of the Defense Industrial Supply Center, Speech Writer and Special Assistant to the Director of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), Army Personnel Command Assignment Manager and Branch Chief, and Deputy Executive Director, J-3, DLA. Following numerous duty assignments across the globe, he retired in 2007 after a 27-year distinguished active-duty military career. Following retirement from the Army, Chuck accepted a position with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), a Department of Energy Federally Funded Research and Development Center where he worked for 14 years. He was a member of Saint Patrick and Shrine Church in Carlisle, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and American Veterans (AMVETS). Colonel Toomey was a recipient of numerous awards and decorations to include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster (OLC), Defense Meritorious Service Medal with OLC, Army Meritorious Service Medal with 2 OLCs, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Australian Army Defense Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with OLC, National Defense Service Medal with OLC, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon with OLC and the Air Assault Badge.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Colonel Toomey will be laid to rest with Full Military Honors at the National Military Cemetery in Bourne, MA on Cape Cod on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop 171 of Boiling Springs, PA.
