Charles Lorn Stoup, Jr., DDS, age 89, of Carlisle, PA, passed away on November 22, 2024. He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Kathleen Deger Stoup.

 Charles was born in Cincinnati, OH, the son of Charles Lorn Stoup, Sr. and Anne Bates Stoup. He grew up in Ohio, graduated from Kentucky Military Institute, and earned BS, MS and DDS degrees and specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery from the Ohio State University. While a student at Ohio State, he played varsity lacrosse and soccer. Charles served in the US Navy, as a hospital corpsman and as a dental officer. He practiced oral surgery in Ashland, KY, Huntington, WV, and for more than forty years in Carlisle, PA. A rite of passage for a generation of Carlisle High School graduates was a trip to Dr. Stoup’s office to have their wisdom teeth extracted. 

 Charles was a member of the American Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and a member of the Pennsylvania and Central Pennsylvania dental societies. He served two terms on the Anesthesia Committee for the national organization. He was also a member and past President of the Harrisburg Area Dental Society.

 A 53-year member of Rotary International, he served as President of the Rotary Club of Carlisle and the Rotary Club of Carlisle Sunrise. As a Rotarian, he volunteered each year for twenty years at Rotary dental clinics in Jamaica, Guatemala, Thailand, and Kenya. He managed and directed the Rotary Dental Clinic at Kilimambogo, Kenya. In recognition of his international dental service, he was presented with the prestigious Service Above Self Award by Rotary International. 

 Charles enjoyed boating for many years on the Chesapeake Bay. He was a member of the Baltimore Yacht Club. A life member and past Commander of the Susquehannock Sail and Power Squadron, he earned the Senior Navigator designation and in recognition of his seamanship was presented the Woody Williams Award and the Prince Henry the Navigator Award. He was a member and past Commodore of the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, Chesapeake Bay Fleet.

 Charles was a leader in many organizations:

  • Twelve years as Chair of the Planning Commission of the Borough of Carlisle
  • Five years as Chair of the Cumberland County Planning Commission
  • Board member of Cares, a homeless shelter organization, where he volunteered for many years
  • Board member, project supervisor and hands on volunteer renovating homes for Habitat for Humanity
  • Member of the Carlisle Borough Authority
  • Board member of Historic Carlisle, Inc.
  • Judge for History Day at Carlisle High School
  • Penn State Master Gardener
  • Member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Carlisle, PA. He served as its treasurer for twelve years, two terms as a member of the Vestry and for more than forty years sang in the choir
  • Member of Cumberland County Honor Guard
  • Host to international fellows from Kenya while they studied at the USAWC.
  • Masonic member of Carlisle Lodge 260; served as Worshipful Master in 1979-1980

 

Singing was an important part of his life, Charles was a member of his high school choir. He sang in Cantate Carlisle for ten years and in barbershop choruses in Carlisle, Harrisburg and New Bern, NC.

 His hobbies were many; his family and friends found many ways to describe Charles: home builder (built two houses from ground up, renovated several), boat builder (built a 30+ foot ketch in his backyard), sailor, Land Rover restorer, historian, gardener, banjo player, runner (completed New York and Boston marathons), craftsman, beer lover (preferred IPA), pilot, lepidopterist, fisherman (43- years surf fishing at the Outer Banks with the same buddies), avid reader, vocalist, lover of Aussie dog breed, mountain climber (climbed Mount Kenya, Peak Lenana 16,355 feet)……..and more……

 In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children and their families:

Stoup, III and his wife Ann, daughter-in-law Patricia Caputo Stoup of Carlisle and their children---James Stoup, his wife Lauren and their son Theo of Brevard, NC; Jennifer Stoup Andersen, her husband Nicholas and their children Mikey and Jackie of Evergreen, CO; Janna Stoup of Denver, CO; Jolyne Stoup and her finance Christof Wittreich of Littleton, CO; Jordynn and Jaelin Stoup of Carlisle, PA. 

Mark D. Stoup, his wife Mary and their children----Kaycee Stoup Hamilton and her husband Alexander and their children Amanuel, Alijah, and Ari; Katie Stoup Trotter, her husband Jonathan and their son Kairo; Kenzie Mae Stoup, Karlee Marie Stoup, Kobey Yohannes Stoup, Kelby Amanuael Stoup and Konley Moges Stoup of Montgomery, AL. 

David B. Stoup, his wife Amy and their children---Zachary, Anna, Madeline and Allison of Clifton Park, NY. 

Andrea Stoup Funk, her husband Gerald and their children---Jamie and Charlie of Carlisle, PA. 

Elizabeth Stoup Cook, her husband Joseph and their children---Madison and Colin of Greenville, NC.

Stepsons George D. Ebner, his wife Bridget and their children---Madeline and Jack of Finksburg, MD and Christopher D. Ebner of Westminster, MD. 

Charles is also survived by his brothers: James H. Stoup of Lakewood Ranch, FL and Thomas B. Stoup and his wife Winifred of Hendersonville, NC. He was preceded in death by his brother Douglas Dandridge.

Heartfelt appreciation is extended to Lisa and Haley of Residential Hospice of Carlisle.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Episcopal Church on the Square in Carlisle.
