Charles Merle Sanders, 90, of Carlisle PA, passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
Charlie was born November 5, 1931, in Abbottstown, PA. He was the son of the late, C. Merle Sanders and Nellie I. (Jacobs) Sanders. He married his high school sweetheart, Frances Lee Elgin, August 16, 1953.
He completed his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College, and obtained a Master's degree in Education from Penn State University. He is remembered fondly by the numerous students and education staff he worked with in the Cumberland Valley and Carlisle School Districts, as well as in the Republic of Palau, Micronesia, through the Department of the Interior.
Charlie valued his years in the military, beginning with college ROTC, serving proudly in the Army during the Korean War, and retiring from the PA National Guard. Retiring at a young age from the Carlisle School District, he and his wife were able to fulfill their hobby of traveling, visiting 28 countries and all 50 states, with most of their highlights involving family and their Airstream trailer.
Charlie was a member (and often an officer) of numerous organizations, including: Carlisle Kiwanis and Elks, American Legion, First United Church of Christ, Carlisle Barracks Retiree Council, U.S.A.H.E.C., Theta Chi Fraternity, 28th Inf. Div. Assoc., Penn State Alum. Assoc., Carlisle Town Band, and Cumberland County Historical Society.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth (Sanders) Hollinger, and brother, Richard E. Sanders.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Jeffrey (Sherry) Sanders and Shelly (Randy) Teska; 5 grandsons: Jared (Melia) Teska, Simon Teska, Christopher (Alaina) Sanders, Patrick (Alison) Sanders, and Eric (Mariah) Sanders; 4 great-grandchildren: Zoey and Daxton Teska, Roman Sanders and Rory Sanders.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on Thursday, May 19, 2022, at First United Church of Christ, 30 N. Pitt St, Carlisle, PA. Visitation will be held at the church prior to the service, from 12:00- 2:00. Everyone is invited to a reception at the church immediately following the service.
Entombment service with Full Military Honors will be held on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 10:30AM at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, 60 Indiantown Gap RD, Annville, PA.
Honoring Charlie's wishes, the family suggest memorial donations be made to CARLISLE TOWN BAND, 35 E South ST, Carlisle PA 17013, or SAFE HARBOUR, 102 W High ST, Carlisle, PA 17013.
