Charles Henry Masland, 3Rd

February 17, 1921 — March 14, 2015

Charles Henry Masland 3rd, husband of Virginia Parlin Masland and son of Charles H. Masland 2nd and Beatrice Graham Masland, died on March 14, 2015 at the age of 94. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their four children: Charles (Chad) H. Masland 4th (wife, Robin Masland), Deborah P. Masland (husband, Marc Tremblay), Elizabeth M. Carlton (husband, Matthew Carlton), and Annetta M. Mewha (husband, David Mewha), 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mr. Masland was born in Philadelphia on February 17, 1921 and lived in the Carlisle area after 1928, graduating from Carlisle High School in 1938. He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in 1942, and a PhD in Physical Chemistry from Yale University in 1950. His studies at Yale were interrupted by serving in the Navy for two years during World War II at the Naval Research Laboratory in Maryland. He married the love of his life, Virginia, in 1953 and celebrated their 61st anniversary last year. Their marriage was an example of the deep love that is possible between a husband and wife and served as an inspiration for many, including his children. Dr. Masland worked for 37 years at C. H. Masland & Sons, carpet manufacturer in Carlisle, in various engineering and research positions, retiring in 1986. During this time, he served on many Carpet and Rug Institute and ASTM committees and was considered "a magician with machinery," setting up the non-woven (needle punch) carpet lines that gave the company a real advantage in growing the automotive business. A longtime lover of music, he enjoyed playing the viola, harmonica, banjo, ukulele and recorder and also collecting unusual instruments. He was an accomplished photographer with a focus on family portraits.
Dr. Masland, a long time devout Christian and great man of faith, was a consistent and sometimes major financial supporter of many ministries and missionaries. Not satisfied with just giving money, he often volunteered at ministries such as the Goodwill Industries for mentally handicapped adults. In addition, he was an editor for detailed language manuscript work created by his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband for Wycliffe Bible Translators. He served as an elder at Greenwood Hills Bible Chapel and Boiling Springs Bible Fellowship Church for many years.
A spiritual leader for his family, friends, and associates, he specifically requested us to invite everyone to join him in Heaven by believing that when the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross, He bore their sins, receiving forgiveness for their sins from His Father, God.
You are invited to join his family Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Boiling Springs Bible Fellowship Church, 4th Street, Boiling Springs, PA 17007. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM. Burial will be held at Mt. Holly Springs Cemetery.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home and Crematory, 219 N. Hanover St., Carlisle, PA is handling the arrangements.
