Charles H. Kruger

Charles H. Kruger, age 87, of Carlisle, passed away Monday, September 11, 2017 at the Thornwald Home, Carlisle.
He was born June 1, 1930 in Carlisle to the late J. N. and Romaine Spenser (Greenwood) Kruger and was the widower of Marlene Elizabeth (Hays) Kruger to whom he was married for 40 years.
Charles was a graduate of Carlisle High School and a proud graduate of Penn State University (then College) earning a BS in Agricultural Sciences. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by the Kruger Dairy from 1954-1970 where he was Managing Partner and Kruger Dairy Farms where he was Manager from 1973-1983. He was also employed as a heavy-duty truck salesman at Keystone Ford Truck Sales. Charles was a member of: Carlisle Jaycees; Y’s Men’s and Women’s Club of Carlisle; YMCA Board of Directors; and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 578 of Carlisle. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Voter’s Hall of Fame by Senator Pat Vance in 2016. He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church from childhood to 1975 where he served as Church Council President and Carlisle Brethren in Christ from 1975 to the present where he ran the Christian Builders Sunday School Class for the last 22 years. Charles was a Penn State sports fan and especially loved to watch their football games. He was also a Steelers fan, enjoyed traveling, especially cross-country car trips, and gardening, both vegetables and flowers.
He is survived by: two daughters, Leslie Shatto of Carlisle and Cathy Wilson (and companion Bill Janes) of Poplarville, MS; three sons, Bryan (wife Heidi) Shatto of Carlisle, Kevin (wife Suzanne) Shatto of Lancaster and Craig (husband Eric) Kruger of Washington, DC; six grandsons, Garrett Wilson, Matthew Shatto, Michael Shatto, Zachary Shatto, Noah Shatto and Austin Shatto; and one great-granddaughter, Mikayah Wilson. In addition to his parents and wife, Charles was preceded in death by three siblings, Marion Light, Richard Kruger and Vernon Kruger.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 201 W. Louther Street, Carlisle, PA with Rev. Kenneth Hoke officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Churchtown. There will be a viewing from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Hoffman Funeral Home & Crematory, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA and at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the services.
