Charles E Maclay, 86, A U.S. Navy Retired Senior Chief of 7 South Ridge Road, Boiling Springs died Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at his home.
Born March 25, 1926, in Edgemont MD, he was the son of the late Carson Earl Maclay and Leafa Elizabeth Harter Maclay.
Chief Maclay graduated from Smithsburg, MD High School, entered the US Navy during World War II and continued his military career until retirement in 1970 after 26 years of service.
Among his honors, he received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with battle Star, Good Conduct Medal (7 Awards), National Defense Service Medal (two awards), World War II Victor Medal, Asiatic Occupation Medal with “A†Clasp, American Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Service Medal.
Following his military Retirement, Chief Maclay worked with Commonwealth National Bank in various positions and retired as Vice President Facilities Management from Commonwealth/Mellon Bank in 1988.
Since retirement, he has volunteered at the Cumberland County Historical Society and indexed more than a million names from church, cemetery, newspaper, Indian school and other documents held by the Society for Genealogical research.
He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Jobyna M. Stoops Maclay and one sister, Doris Elaine Nussbaumer. Surviving are a son Charles E. Jr (Darlene) of Buffalo, NY and four grandchildren, Kiersten Katherine, Lindsey Marie, Courtney Renee and Charles Trey; and a son William E. of Boiling Springs, Pa; two grandsons Shane and William E. Jr; and two brothers Robert E. of Ware Shoals, SC and John E. of Baltimore, MD.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 647 Forge Road, Boiling Springs. Burial will be private. A visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Monday, February, 25, 2013 at Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle.
The Family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Cumberland County Historical Society, 21 North Pitt Street, Carlisle, PA 17013 or American Lung Association, 3001 Old Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill, PA 17011 or Celtic Hospice, 220 Wilson Street, Suite 100, Carlisle, PA 17013.
