C. Adrian Shoemaker

C. Adrian Shoemaker, 91, of Carlisle, died on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at Carlisle Regional Medical Center. Adrian was born on December 26, 1922, Carlisle Hospital, the only child of C. Howard and Fleta (Orris) Shoemaker. He married Anna Thumma on October 11, 1941.
He graduated from Carlisle High School, Class of 1940, where "Abbie" was active in the Dramatic Club, Thespian Club, Hi-Y Club, Budget Club, and A Capella Choir; he served as business manager of the yearbook. In 1943 he completed with honors a course with the American Technical Society.
Adrian served his country during WWII from 1943 until 1946 in various posts, including the military police in France. He was discharged as Sergeant.
During his 47 years with C. H. Masland & Sons Carpet Company in Carlisle, where he started as a rug clerk, "Ade" held many positions including payroll supervisor, assistant to the president, national contract coordinator and later sales manager, and numerous other titles.
His proudest professional achievement was his leadership in setting up and managing the first Floorcovering Customer Service Department when Masland established its own sales force.
Active in many local civic organizations, he served as chairman of the United Fund and the American Red Cross Fund drive. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Goodwill Fire Company, the American Legion Post 101, the Cumberland Star Lodge 197 F&AM, and the VFW Post 477. A member of Rotary for over 50 years, during which he was secretary for 6 years, he was a Paul Harris Fellow. During his retirement he helped manage the political campaigns of his friend Earl Keller, Cumberland County Commissioner for 12 years.
He enjoyed stamp, coin, and postcard collecting; fishing with his father and later his grandsons; playing cards and dining out with family and friends; traveling with Anna; and taking great delight in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At the time of his death, he was the oldest continuous member of First Lutheran Church, Carlisle, where he was baptized as an infant and where the funeral service will be held.
Those left to honor his memory include his loving wife; three daughters: Ann Snyder (and husband Jim) of Allentown, PA; Natalie Parenteau (and husband Paul) of The Villages, FL; and Jeanne Quintile of Lebanon, NJ; eight grandchildren: Steven Prescott, Anthony Quintile, David Hartenstine, Christopher Quintile, Jason Prescott, C. Daniel Hartenstine, Amanda Tiboni, and Lindsey Parenteau; five great-grandchildren: Sydney and Halle Prescott, Robert and Jessi Prescott, and Aidan Quintile; and nieces and nephews.
A Liturgy of Christian Remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014 in the First Lutheran Church, 100 East High Street, Carlisle with the Rev. Lisa M. Leber officiating. Burial will be private in Longsdorf Cemetery. There will be no viewing.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to The Benevolent Fund of Cumberland Crossings, 1 Longsdorf Way, Carlisle, PA 17015 or Project Share, 5 North Orange Street, Suite 4, Carlisle, PA 17013. The family is most grateful for the care and concern shown for Adrian and Anna by the entire staff of Cumberland Crossings during their nine years as residents.
