Bruce E. Miller

Bruce Edward Miller, 72, passed away on August 6, 2019 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He was born June 14, 1947 in Braddock, PA to the late Charlotte (McCabe) and Charles Miller. A native of Pitcairn, PA he moved to Newville, PA in 1970 after being assigned to PSP Newville, most recently he resided in Carlisle, PA.
Bruce attended Gateway Area School District and graduated in 1965. After high school he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served two tours in Vietnam with the 3rd Marines 8-inch Howitzer Battery. Upon returning he was stationed at MCAS Cherry Point as a Military Police officer. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle Badge, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1969 and returned home to Pittsburgh. Bruce’s passion for law enforcement lead him to the Pennsylvania State Police. He graduated from the academy in 1970 and served as a Trooper in south central Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1992. He loved his job and said there was never a day he did not want to go to work. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a private investigator, serving on the borough council in Newville, and restoring old homes.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Miller and companion Laurel Wood of Mechanicsburg and a daughter, Allyn Miller-James wife of Matthew James of Summerville, SC. He has five grandchildren, Samuel and Nathaniel Miller of Mechanicsburg and Faye, Rayna and Aaron James of Summerville, SC. He is also survived by five siblings: Timothy Miller of Greensburg, PA, twin sister Rebecca Clarke of Oak Island, NC, sisters Donna Mitchell and Judith Strother, both of Reston, VA, and brother William Miller of Monroeville, PA and many nieces and nephews.
Bruce loved to sail, cook, drink Hefeweisen, woodwork and all things guns and military history. He was always up to the challenge of researching your every need and question. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The past three and half years were only due to the family of Joseph Burlew, Jr. The Burlew family chose to donate their son’s organs and Bruce was a receipt of one of his lungs after developing severe pulmonary fibrosis from his time in the Marine Corps. His family is forever grateful.
There will be a visitation on Monday, August 12th from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory 2020 West Trindle Road Carlisle, PA. Burial will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with Military Honors.
