He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifle Badge, and the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1969 and returned home to Pittsburgh. Bruce’s passion for law enforcement lead him to the Pennsylvania State Police. He graduated from the academy in 1970 and served as a Trooper in south central Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1992. He loved his job and said there was never a day he did not want to go to work. After his retirement he enjoyed working as a private investigator, serving on the borough council in Newville, and restoring old homes.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Miller and companion Laurel Wood of Mechanicsburg and a daughter, Allyn Miller-James wife of Matthew James of Summerville, SC. Bruce loved to sail, cook, drink Hefeweisen, woodwork and all things guns and military history. He was always up to the challenge of researching your every need and question. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The past three and half years were only due to the family of Joseph Burlew, Jr. The Burlew family chose to donate their son’s organs and Bruce was a receipt of one of his lungs after developing severe pulmonary fibrosis from his time in the Marine Corps. His family is forever grateful.
