Brian Jones Heckendorn

March 7, 1980 — October 15, 2020

Brian (BJ) Heckendorn, 40, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 15, 2020 at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital from a bacterial infection. Born March 7, 1980 in Carlisle, he is the son of Glenn (Ed) and Diane Heckendorn. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Rebecca (Hatley) Heckendorn, son, Brexton Heckendorn, brother, Chris Heckendorn and his wife Sally, their children, Samantha and Alex Heckendorn, maternal grandparents, Elwood and Doris Jones and paternal grandparents late Glenn Heckendorn and Doris Jean Biagi.
BJ attended Big Spring High School and graduated from Middletown High School in Middletown, Rhode Island where he moved to in his senior year to play junior hockey. He attended Salem State College in Salem, MA before leaving to play minor pro hockey. BJ also leaves behind many friends and teammates from when he played hockey in Biddeford, Maine, Exeter, New Hampshire, Muskegon, Michigan, Winston Salem, North Carolina, and St. Charles, Missouri. He met his wife, Rebecca, while playing in Missouri. After hockey, BJ trained and fought as an MMA fighter.
Although BJ achieved and enjoyed success during his athletic career, nothing meant more to him than his son, Brexton. He loved spending every day with him and teaching him to play baseball, basketball and football. He affectionately called him “monkey boy”. He was a very proud father as he watched Brexton play his first football game for the Big Spring Middle School team on October 1, 2020.
BJ always loved helping people which he continued to do in death as an organ donor. He was an avid Patriots, Red Sox and Colorado Avalanche fan and loved all animals.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 2070 Newville Road, Plainfield, PA on Saturday, October 31st at 2:00 pm. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Hoffman Funeral Home and Crematory in Carlisle. Due to Covid-19 mandates, face masks must be worn. Also, due to Covid-19, the Celebration Service will be private. The Service will be streamed live. Look for the link on Hoffman’s Funeral Home’s web site.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a trust/college fund for Brexton. Please make your check payable to: Brexton Heckendorn and send it to: M & T Bank, Stonehedge Branch, 960 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle, PA 17015.
