Blair McClenachan, who retired to Carlisle to attend Dickinson School of Law, died Monday, April 11, 2011. He was 88 and a son of the late William Blake McClenachan II and Helen (Taylor) McClenachan of Chester, Delaware County.
Blair graduated from Chester High School in 1941 and went on to Dartmouth College, graduating in 1945. He was a multi-sport athlete in both high school and college. His undergraduate study was interrupted by the necessity of Army Air Corps deployment in World War II, where he served in Iwo Jima and in the South Pacific Theatre.
He returned to Dartmouth to continue his education at the Tuck School of Business Administration, from which he received his MBA in 1947.
After a career of 35 years in advertising, he relocated to Carlisle to enroll in law school at the age of 65. Blair was 69 when he received his law degree and passed the Pennsylvania Bar Exam the next year. He then worked in the Gettysburg District Attorney’s Office and was a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
An active sportsman, he was a member of the Carlisle Fish and Game. Additionally, he was a member of American Legion Post 101 and VFW Post 477, both in Carlisle.
Blair was an avid fisherman and loved the Jersey Shore, where he motored through the Intracoastal Waterway in his boat, the “Cupcake.” He enjoyed proud ownership of several sports cars and membership in auto sports associations.
While living in suburban Philadelphia, Blair was an active member of the Racquet Club and the Cynwyd Club, spending countless hours perfecting his squash and tennis games in the company of friends and family.
With unparalleled devotion to his own family’s pet creatures throughout his life, he also donated liberally to local and world organizations dedicated to assuring the well-being of unwanted or neglected animals.
Surviving are his beloved and devoted wife of 40 years, Eileen (Hession) McClenachan of Carlisle, as well as two daughters, Anne McClenachan of Orford, N.H., and Sarah Mortimer of North Attleboro, Mass. He is additionally survived by four grandchildren, Sean and Matthew McClenachan and Emily and Kevin Mortimer.
He was preceded in death by his son, Andrew; his brother, William Blake McClenachan III; and his first wife, Suzanne (Gilhams) McClenachan.
A memorial service to celebrate Blair’s life will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church on the Square in Carlisle. Burial will be Monday, May 9, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with full military honors.
