Bishop Gerald E. Miller

Bishop Gerald E. Miller, 84, of Mechanicsburg, passed peacefully surrounded by his family, Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Country Meadows, Mechanicsburg.
Born December 14, 1927 in West Sand Lake, NY, he was a son of the late Edmund and Cora Hidley Miller.
He was a graduate of Hartwick College, Oneonta, NY and later received his Master of Divinity Degree from Philadelphia Seminary. Gerald received his Honorary Doctorate in 1988 from Susquehanna University. Gerald served as pastor to four Lutheran churches before becoming assistant to the Bishop in the Central Pennsylvania Synod and was later elected Bishop of the Allegheny Synod in 1987. He loved baseball “Pittsburgh Piratesâ€Â, traveling, music, fishing, and most of all his family.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Jean Rothermel Miller of Mechanicsburg; two sons, David Miller (and wife, Juane) of Mechanicsburg and Geoffrey Miller (and wife, Cynthia) of Highland, NY; two daughters, Deborah Knuth (and husband, Paul) of Camp Hill and Diane Houghton of Mechanicsburg; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Raymond Miller and one sister, Evelyn Wilson.
A service of celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 44 West Main Street, Shiremanstown with Pastor Michael L. Seifried officiating. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.
Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 219 North Hanover Street, Carlisle is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
