Betty A. Nelson, of Newville, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024 at the age of 89 at the UPMC Carlisle Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born November 25, 1935 to the late Edward and Mabel (Gutshall) Foster, she was the loving wife of the late Foster E. Nelson, Jr.
Betty was a homemaker for many years, and was known for her baking and canning skills. Friends and family enjoyed her homemade spaghetti sauce and sauerkraut, along with her homemade sticky buns and strawberry jelly. She particularly enjoyed sharing her cooking, baking and canning skills with her younger brother George, who took an interest in learning her skills. Betty also enjoyed camping and working outside in her garden. Betty was known to be a very generous and unselfish person.
Betty is survived by her four daughters, Nancy Alleman (late husband Robert), of Shippensburg; Linda Brough (husband Donald “Butch”), of Newville; Lisa Nelson, of Newville; and Lori Spangle, of Carlisle. She is also survived by her sister Ruth Hoover, of Carlisle and sister-in-law Carol Foster, of Newville, and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Grandchildren Duane, Chris, Heidi, Kamm, Summer, Anthony, Sarah, and Felicia also survive her, along with 21 great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by a grandson Justin Barrick, sister Gloria "Sis" Chestnut, brother Leroy “Sonny” Foster, Sister Gladys Gayman, brother George Foster and Great-grandson Aidon.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 13, 2025 with the Rev. Larry Strouse officiating at Hoffman Funeral and Cremation, 2020 W. Trindle Road, Carlisle, PA 17013. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Westminster Cemetery, Carlisle.
